WRITING WORKSHOPS

At Living Hyphen, we believe that representation matters. We need to see ourselves in the media that we consume to be able to imagine ourselves in experiences. We need to see ourselves in the media that we consume to aspire for opportunities greater than what may be available in our immediate world. But in addition to representation, we also need programming, resources, and mentorship to turn that imagining into action and into reality.

Our storytelling workshops are our way of actively and tenderly cultivating, nurturing, and mentoring racialized storytellers  —  many of whom come into our workshops highly reluctant to even call themselves that. We are creating intentional spaces where hyphenated Canadians feel compelled and confident to share their nuanced and complex stories.

Our workshops are the most radical thing we do at Living Hyphen. Radical – though it shouldn’t be – because of the voices that we prioritize, but even more radical because of our approach and pedagogy. 

We take a decolonial, intersectional, and anti-oppressive approach to all of our workshops. We let go of perfection and embrace our messy pages. We focus on the nourishing and healing process of writing instead of the product. And we embrace writing as an embodied practice that brings together mind and body making for a healing and joyful journey.
